Dr. Maria Montessori, Founder of Montessori Schools Dates: Born: August 31, 1870 in Chiaravalle, Italy.Died: May 6, 1952 in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Early Adulthood: An extraordinarily gifted person with the scholarly bent of a Madame Curie and the compassionate soul of a Mother Teresa, Dr.  Maria Montessori was ahead of her time. She became Italys first female doctor when she graduated in 1896. Initially, she took care of childrens bodies and their physical ailments and diseases. Then her natural intellectual curiosity led to an exploration of childrens minds and how they learn. She believed that environment was a major factor in child development. Professional Life: Appointed Professor of Anthropology at the University of Rome in 1904, Montessori represented Italy at two international womens conferences: Berlin in 1896 and London in 1900. She amazed the world of education with her glass classroom at the Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco in 1915, which allowed people to observe the classroom. In 1922 she was appointed Inspector of Schools in Italy. She lost that position when she refused to have her young charges take the fascist oath as the dictator Mussolini required. Travels to America: Montessori visited the U.S. in 1913 and impressed Alexander Graham Bell who founded the Montessori Education Association in his Washington, D.C. home. Her American friends included Helen Keller and Thomas Edison.  She also conducted training sessions and addressed the NEA and the International Kindergarten Union. Training Her Followers: Montessori was a teacher of teachers. She wrote and lectured unceasingly. She opened a research institute in Spain in 1917 and conducted training courses in London in 1919. She founded training centers in the Netherlands in 1938 and taught her methodology in India in 1939. She established centers in The Netherlands (1938) and England (1947). An ardent pacifist,  Montessori escaped harm during the turbulent 20s and 30s by advancing her educational mission in the face of hostilities. Honors: She earned Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 1949, 1950 and 1951. Educational Philosophy: Montessori was profoundly influenced by Fredrich Froebel, the inventor of kindergarten, and by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, who believed  children learned through activity. She also drew inspiration from Itard, Seguin and Rousseau. She enhanced their approaches by adding her own belief that we must follow the child. One does not teach children, but rather creates a nurturing climate in which children can teach themselves through creative activity and exploration. Methodology: Montessori wrote over a dozen books.The most well known are  Montessori Method (1916) and The Absorbent Mind (1949). She taught that placing children in a stimulating environment will encourage learning. She saw the traditional teacher as a keeper of the environment who was there to facilitate the childrens self-conducted learning process.   Legacy: The  Montessori Method  got its start with the opening of the original Casa Dei Bambini in the slum district of Rome known as San Lorenzo. Montessori took fifty deprived ghetto children and awakened them to lifes excitement and possibilities. Within months people came from near and far to see her in action and to learn her strategies. She founded the Association Montessori Internationale in 1929 so that her teachings and educational philosophy would flourish in perpetuity. In the 21st Century: Montessoris pioneering work  began at the beginning of the twentieth century. One hundred years later, her philosophy and approach remain  fresh and in tune with modern minds. In particular, her work resonates with parents who seek to stimulate children through creative activity and exploration in all its forms. Children educated in Montessori Schools know who they are as people. They are confident, at ease with themselves, and interact on a high social plane with peers and adults. Montessori students are naturally curious about their surroundings and eager to explore.   Montessori Schools have spread throughout the world. What Montessori started as a scientific investigation has flourished as a monumental humanitarian and pedagogical endeavor.  After her death in 1952, two members of her  family continued her work. Many viewers cannot believe that people get paid for filming such things but yet they are stuck to their TV screens watching. Reality television comes in different varieties which is another factor in its popularity, reality TV being so expansive reaches out to a number of different viewers. People interested in partying are able to view people like that as well as there are shows about doctors and about bidding on unknown items. Because there are different shows’ ranging from A-Z it causes more people to watch reality television which enhances reality televisions popularity. From Rome to Columbia: A Comparison of Jesse Hall and The Pantheon Ess

For much of the last millennia many great architects have looked upon the Pantheon as a staple of classical architecture, as well as a model for many modern day buildings. Created by the Romans, the Pantheon would use many elements better than any other works of architecture to that time. No further than Columbia Missouri is this evident in the construction of what used to be known as the First Academic Building on the University of Missouri campus. The Architects Bell and Binder headed the creation of the new building after the First Academic Building burnt down in 1892. Known today as Jesse Hall, this modern day work of architecture pulls many elements from the Pantheon to create a unique work of public space. The most glaring comparison of both comes from the domes that top both buildings. Each building also shares similar characteristics in their front facades. Yet, while there are many similarities to both works, each contain unique differences in their layout and construction. One of the most defining features of both the Pantheon and Jesse Hall is the larges domes that sit atop their structures. When the Pantheon was created, there was no dome ever created to the scale or size of the one that tops the building to this day. The dome itself sits on a drum like structure that supports the structure. The top is not completely curved like many other domes today. A stepped dome is used near the bottom and begins to curve more towards the top where the oculus sits. This oculus allows any sort of element into the building including sunlight, rain, and snow. The Pantheon, being a space of religious worship when originally created used the dome for many different purposes. The ways the spaces are used are key to the layout of the interiors of the Pantheon and Jesse Hall. With the Pantheon being built over 1700 years ago, it’s amazing that architects are still using features and techniques from this work of architecture in modern creations. The use of this type of classical architecture will continue to be used in works for public space due to its remarkable exterior appearance and it’s long lasting structural durability. When both Jesse hall and the Pantheon are compared it is possible to see their similarities from the types of domes that top each, their external facades, and their interior plan. While they share many similarities, the differences that Bell and Binder used in their creation make this work of architecture unique to many other public spaces.

Taking Sides Essay Fonseca, Ricardo English Period 5 October 3, 2012 In the story â€Å"Taking Sides† by Gary Soto, Lincoln Mendoza, the main character, faces many conflicts that you may think that they won't affect him but when these problems become a major role, the result of them cause him to act differently. Lincoln deals with these problems in different ways. He tries to resolve them by talking to the people he has problems with. Another thing he does is that he tries to avoid the problem.I will give two examples of the kind of problems Lincoln Mendoza deals with. One of the first problems Lincoln is faced with is Roy, his mother's boyfriend. This problem affects Lincoln in many ways; one way this problem affects him is by taking time away from Lincoln and his mother. Lincoln already has little time to spend with his own mother, and the little time they have with each other is being used by his mother to date Roy. Lincoln doesn't like this because his mother can never go to his games and she is always busy with work.Roy was shorter than his mother, pudgy and pale, and drove a baby blue BMW, which Lincoln thought was a girl's color. Roy always flinches when Lincoln's dog, Flaco, barks. He doesn't like it when his mother dates men who flinch when the dog barks. Lincoln had a conversation with Roy and it was about basketball. He had no idea that Roy played basketball when he was his age, but Lincoln learned that when Roy told him about the game when Franklin played against Columbus.Roy told him about how his coach Yesutis cried when a player from Franklin punched him in the face. This is when Lincoln found out why his coach hated Franklin so much. Eventually the conflict of his mother using her time with Lincoln to date Roy was resolved by Lincoln getting along with Roy. They became friends because they had some similarities because of basketball. This changed Lincoln because before he disliked Roy for taking time away from Lincoln and his mother but n ow he likes him. Another problem in the story was his coach Yesutis.The coach is always too hard on him. He never gives Lincoln a break even though he is like the star player. When Lincoln is hurt, his coach still makes him practice or play. For example, Lincoln hurt his toe and he complained to his coach but the coach made him practice through it, he told him to toughen up. Lincoln talked with his friend James about coach always being too hard on him and James said that coach could be weird at times. Lincoln hates his coach for this and thinks that he shouldn't be on their backs all the time.James had told Lincoln that coach Yesutis is just making them stronger, but Lincoln said that you can't coach by calling them names, and he said that sometimes he doesn't even know I'd the coach knows what he is doing half of the times. Lincoln also says that his coach's plays are stupid, and watch when they play a black team. Another example of his coach being too hard on Lincoln was when Linc oln had hurt his knee when he was playing basketball in the rain with Monica and she jumped up and hit him under his chin, which caused him to fall to the floor and bang up his knee.His knee was swollen for days and it was as purple as an onion. His coach put him as someone's back up because he kept complaining about his knee, but he still made Lincoln play through it and didn't give him a break. What Lincoln learns from this is that he can be tough and play through these injuries, but he also learns how idiotic his coach can be. In this story Lincoln faced many conflicts and resolved them on his own. These problems changed him in a few different ways but mostly they changed him emotionally and the way he thinks. He learned a few things about his coach and also more things about himself and his friends.

To understand how many questions you can get wrong and still achieve a perfect 1600, you need to understand how the test is scored. I'll give a brief summary here, but if you're interested in more details about the scoring process, check out ourguide onhow to calculate SAT score. For the whole test, you receive one point for correct answers, and you receive zero points for a wrong answer and questions skipped. Since you’re not penalized for wrong answers, skipping or answering a question incorrectly results in the same score. NOTE:The essay is not factored into your composite SAT score (400-1600 scale), so I will not discuss it further in this article. However, for more information on the new SAT essay, read our other guide. To calculate your Math section, you start by calculating a raw score, which is simply the number of questions answered correctly (if you answered 50 correctly, your raw score is 50). For the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, you start by calculating two raw scores: one for the Reading portion and one for the Writing and Language portion. Just as in the Math section, the raw scores are just the number of questions answered correctly. For both sections, each raw score is then converted into a scaled score - the exact conversion varies by test date. However, the College Board provides this example chart intheir SAT practice testas an estimate: Let's go through how the scoring works for each section in a bit more depth.For Math, the raw to scaled score conversion is very simple. Let’s say you miss two questions (you got 56 correct out of 58 questions); your raw score will be a 56. You then find the corresponding scaled score for Math on the chart, which is 790. Your Math section score would be a 790. For Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, the conversion is a little more complicated since you get two raw scores. You then find the corresponding scaled score for each of those sections: Reading: 49 questions right = 38 scaled score Writing: 34 questions right = 32 scaled score Next, you add together the two separate scaled scores and multiply by 10 to get your Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section score. In the chart below, I have analyzed eight official SAT score charts and determined the number of questions you can get wrong or skip on each part of the test for an 800 in the section. These official practice SAT were written by the same people who write actual SATs. This means they're a great resource for analysis because you can be sure they'll be very similar to the SAT you take on exam day. NOTE: Since you’re not penalized for wrong answers, skipping vs. answering a question incorrectly results in the same score. If you're aiming for 1600, strive for perfection in Math. To get an 800 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, you cannot get any questions wrong on the Writing and Reading portions. Occasionally, an SAT will allow you to get one wrong or to skip one as you can see on Tests 1, 3 and 5 for the Reading section, or Test 5 for the Writing section. However, as with Math, that is not the norm. If you're aiming for 1600, prepare to get zero wrong in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. Overall, on the SAT, you should aim to get no questions wrong if you want a perfect score.This is no easy feat, but it is possible. After all, about 500 students do it each year! What Does This Mean If You'reTrying to Get a 1600? You need to make sure that you can finish the entire test in the allotted time since you cannot afford to skip or miss any questions. For Math, you need to be basically perfect. You can see, through my analysis, on six out of eight Math sections, you cannot get any questions wrong if you want an 800. For Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, you also need to be basically perfect. On three out of eight Reading portions, you could get one wrong and still get 800, but you can’t rely on having that opportunity.
